University of Nebraska-Lincoln Innovation Campus Case Study
The new Maker’s Space, located on the Innovation Campus in Lincoln, is the dream of Dr. Shane Farritor – a mechanical engineering professor, who had this experience in college at MIT. Students of all disciplines can join the Maker’s Space to do design work and create projects utilizing 3D printing, wood working, metalworking, CNC milling, electronic test work, and have access to all types of hand tools. IC Energy Solutions in conjunction with Tetrad Properties and the University of NE Foundation, donated an Intelligent Lighting System that works around the occupant’s schedule. The lighting system is comprised of products from several manufacturers all controlled with one software system. The wireless system allows for each room to have its own profile or operating schedule. Partner the control system with motion and daylight harvesting on the fixtures and you have a recipe for a very innovative lighting system that can be controlled to get great lighting levels when the space is in use and maximized energy savings when it is not. The system has been fine-tuned based on operations and has an average energy cost of $2.16 per day for the 22,000 square foot facility.
